Real estate website design: Form and Function

There is more to good real estate website design then meets the eye.  In fact, really good real estate website design meets from and function so well, that it looks deceivingly simple.  So what makes good real estate website design?

To begin with quality real estate website design goes a lot further then gathering information and putting it up on the web.  From a macro perspective quality real estate websites are both easy to understand and capture the readers attention.  If your real estate website design is not  clear and easy to understand, a user will move on. If your real estate website design has nothing substantial to capture your reader, again, they will move on.  So before you jump into your real estate website design, think about what messages and information your trying to convey. Further, think about who your are conveying it to; you audience.

On a more micro level what elements should be present in good real estate website design?

1.    Be consistent.  The look and feel of your site should be the same from one page to the next throughout the whole site. In terms of real estate website design, this includes navigation elements, colors, fonts and text formatting.

2.    Make it easy to move around.  Your user should have several different ways to move around your real estate website.  When you start to finalize your real estate website design, really look at how hard (or easy) it is for a user to move from one page to the next and back.  Navigation elements should be super easy to find and even easier to use.  This is one of the biggest challenges in real estate website design.  If we were to throw every real estate website design element out the window, to make links easy to find and easy to use, we could simply make them huge and bright pink. Unfortunately, navigation aids have to be in the context of the site as whole, which makes them a challenging aspect of real estate website design.

3.    Don’t challenge your users.  Your users want information. They don’t want a real estate website design that makes them jump through hoops to get it.  You and your information should be front and center.

Real estate website design is a challenge for anyone, however, it is far from impossible. Remember, when it comes to real estate website design, you are not alone. The web has some very good information out there.  For more information on real estate website design, click the link below.
