What is CMS? Content management system or CMS, is a software package that allows a user to literally manage information. Using a centralized admin area within a cms, users can create, organize, update, edit and delete information. This is particularly handy for those running a large, website. Imagine running an online catalogue containing thousands of unique and varied items. It is a logistical nightmare. The time it would take to publish, edit and update the whole site, page by page would be unreal. However, using a CMS the task becomes much more streamlined and efficient. For example, while adding each item, the user may have only to update the content in plain English and update the CMS. The CMS then inserts the new information into a new page, with correct code (site design and pagination etc.) and publishes the page. This is one example of how a CMS or content management system make large, data rich projects more manageable. A quality CMS will do exactly what the user requires it to do. Let me back up for a second. A CMS is not a digital miracle. A content management system will not bring about world peace, make coffee, or save kittens from high slung tree branches. A CMA is however, a series of tools that have been designed for the efficiency needs of the end user in mind. Thus, a quality CMS will do exactly what the user requires it to do. It should be scalable, so that as the users needs grow, so to does the CMS. A content management system should be easy to use and easy to customize. In short, a CMS should fit around the needs of its user and not the other way around. There are some exciting uses for content management systems perhaps the most powerful is the use of content management systems in the field of real estate. For the first time real estate professionals can maintain their own websites – a powerful tool for lead generation – without extensive coding knowledge. This has been crucial in the industry for two reasons. First, in the past, many real estate professionals have relied on third parties to maintain and operate their sites. This is both inefficient and expensive. Second, it means that through the use of a CMS a real estate professional can free up time and focus on their strengths: selling properties.
